The characters are not what you expect – not in the ultimate Scooby Doo way, but in more subtle and incremental ways that reveal real people – they unfold over time, in a new context, or when forced by circumstances. The setting here is post-WWII-horror. Adrien Brody’s Laszlo, a Jewish architect who has escaped the clutches of a bloody Europe, steps into the welcoming arms of America — or rather, faces it — in a frantic opening sequence that awakens him to the fact that he was literally born from the Statue of Liberty. Let it be a perpetual navigational journey through the various horrors of life: existential, professional, familial, intimate — never taking his eyes off the prize of great achievement and never estimating the value of that prize. What’s the lesson? The shameful discovery that his success was born not in spite of his trauma, but because of it? Do we have a duty to abuse? To culture, country, power, and those who wield it in the construction of our barbaric legacies (and homelands)? Are our lives burning gasoline on the way to a more meaningful place? The film is engaging, cool-looking, and not boring (did you hear it’s long?). It’s apparently based on an old novel – I’m a mystery tome for some of the details the film refuses to share. But there’s no novel. This old man’s search for meaning becomes ours.
